We made a Sunday excursion down to The Produce Place in Melbourne today. The Produce Place is one of my favorite places to visit. There’s different fruits and vegetables available depending on the season, plus the unusual things we need every so often like Asian groceries. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any quinoa to make the cilantro-lime quinoa dish from the last issue of Z-Life magazine, so that will have to wait.
I did find some great fruit though! Right inside the front door there was a stand of muscadine grapes, one of my favorite Southern delicacies.
Turns out the best part about muscadines is that none of my family wants to bother with grapes that have seeds and skins, so almost of all them are mine! (Insert evil cackle here.) They don’t know what they’re missing.
Then around the corner in the left room we found “apple bananas”, something I’d never had before. They look like regular bananas that got zapped with a shrink gun. Each one is only about 3-4 inches long. They have thin peels and an apple-ish taste in the fruit. We gobbled them down in the car before we were half a mile down the road!
Other pickings for the day – cabbage, carrots, and rice noodles for Pancit Bihon, tomatoes and new potatoes for grilling, and wonton wrappers for Pete’s pot stickers.
